When Blue Origin starts delivering payload to orbit, *then* it will be Coke vs Pepsi! For now it’s Coke vs Mr. Pibb…. ๐
Space billionaires are publicly exchanging back handed compliments about their reusable rockets. This is the future I want to live in.
I do think that a New Shepard/F9 1st stage comparison is apples-to-oranges, (particularly the F9 boost-back and RTLS trajectory is much faster and higher than New Shepard’s trajectory) but I sure hope that doesn’t stop Jeff and Elon from arguing about it on Twitter. ๐
I hope this tweet causes Blue to be more open….
I retweeted this when I saw it…
@SpaceX didn’t do this in the desert, in secret. They did it in front of the world, all eyes on them. No fear.
As a space cadet, I hope so too.
But I also don’t feel like Blue owes me anything and it’s their prerogative to develop their vehicles as they wish. Also, the practical reason for doing it “in front of the world” is it’s very difficult to hide a launch (and landing!) from Cape Canaveral. Do Masten and Virgin write a blog post for every test flight? Do they invite media to every launch? When was the last time Moon Express showed us pictures of their hardware?
I like Eric Berger. He’s a pro and he does good work. But I think he could have left that tweet in the drawer.
Upon further reflection, Virgin flight tests are probably infrequent enough that they do post something for each flight.
The domestic rivalry is nice and Russia, China, the Europeans, Japan, and India just got a big wake up call too. Only time will tell if any of these government run systems can compete or if they have a private industry that can rise to the challenge.
Now that our launch systems are making progress, we really need a good strategy for LEO and BEO.
… and long long overdue…. ๐
