When my neighbor’s sons were small, he explained to me the word “oversharing”, which was accompanied with a hand sign where both sets of thumbs and fingers came together to form a large “O.”
“Sharing”, of course, has long been in the lexicon of persons who shop at Whole Foods. Oversharing is taking this good practice of telling personal stories a step too far and disclosing family secrets. Such secrets could be matters the parents want to keep private, say, Mom and Dad having sharp words with each other about something the child had done, or perhaps disclosing too much information about spending habits, for which there is a long list of technical reasons to keep private to explain all of them to kids. So that is why the term “oversharing” was coined along with the “O” hand sign like the “T” sign of “time out.”
