There’s been a lot of misreporting on this issue all week, that I’ve been admonishing people about on Twitter. Michael Listner explains the issue: No, the Outer Space Treaty does not prevent us from approaching water on Mars.

Seriously, if the United States claimed the Moon or Mars for itself after having successfully placed permanent bases there, what would anyone else do about it?
Substitute “China” (or “Elon Musk”) for “United States,” and it’s the same thing. Personally, I think Elon has a better chance than China, while the United States has no chance whatsoever.
Mars is already contaminated. Considering the places we have found life. like growing on the exterior of the ISS, can we really rule out that humans have not contaminated Mars already?
I thought it was funny how one of the articles said that we had to wait for humans to do the investigation to prevent contamination, like humans are sterile.
