Would Mark Watney have been able to stay sane?
I think it’s realistic to think he’d have been fine, as long as he had some level of hope, and tasks with which to occupy himself.

The strange thing about loneliness is it’s not about being physically alone or isolated. It’s about not feeling connected to others in shared feelings. You can’t claim any situation makes one lonelier than another. Some people isolated in jail for years have felt connected to god and friends they never get to see, even to death.
OTOH, You can be lonely in a crowded room.
Why not just avoid the whole “keep sane” issue by making insanity a prerequisite for an astronaut?
I’ve always thought that sanity is highly overrated. Caveat: I’ve never tried sanity myself.
Shhh… you’re giving away my secrets CJ.
