They are not an oxymoron.
There are libertarians on both sides of the issue, and always have been. It’s a philosophical issue of when one judges that a human has a right to life.

The libertarian case for abortion rights is similar to the egalitarian case for closed borders. It makes sense as long as you assume that some human beings are unpersons.
Sorry, but but against open borders don’t view the people coming here illegally as unhumans. One could as easily say that people who support open borders don’t view United States citizens or immigrants as humans and it would be just as rediculous thing to say.
Those who support unconditional open borders don’t believe the United States has the right to exist as a distinct country. We are still a relatively wealthy nation but we can’t support an unlimited number of people. Sooner or later, you run out of other people’s money.
Problem: welfare state
Solution: open borders
I really don’t know how you still can’t get this.
The first civil right is life, and while you can ask 8 libertarians what libertarianism is and get 10 answers, even the most radical libertarian would agree that protecting the life of innocent citizens, particularly innocent children.
So what does it say about liberals and progressives, who claim out of compassion that the government should take care of everyone’s needs are less likely than the most radical heartless anti-government libertarian to protect the most basic need, life?
What’s innocent about a parasite?
