Because, you know, the only way to “play it straight” is to agree with him.
I don’t think we’ve ever seen a president so contemptuously dismissive of the motives of anyone who disagrees with him. He is almost constitutionally unable to grant good will to what he views as his only enemies, which are domestic, not foreign.
If they want to play it straight, they’ll agree with strategy described by Johnathan Gruber and rule that only State Exchanges qualify for subsidies. Too bad SCOTUS can’t undo the Congressional subsidy fix as well.
The nice thing about having the NSA spying on literally everybody is it provides great blackmail material for those awkward moments when you need someone to “do the right thing”.
Interesting that he acknowledges that a loss at SCOTUS would be a terrible problem for the bill, but also acknowledges that he would not have a plan to fix it. Because it would be in the hands of Congress, and Congress doesn’t do what he wants any more…
Also interesting that he focuses on Congressional intent during the writing of the bill, which is something that everyone is writing about, but that his lawyers did not make part of their claim before the Court. Because then they would lose, as that doesn’t really matter to the Court’s decision on what the bill says.

“but also acknowledges that he would not have a plan to fix it”
The other day, Obama said that it didn’t need any fixing. I know you mean for if the courts rule against the subsidies but isn’t it interesting that Obama thinks Obamacare is totally perfect and doesn’t need any fixes?
The only way I can interpret Obama comments like that one and the one he made the other day that the court should have never accepted this case, is this;
“It’s a real nice court you’ve got there. It’d be a shame if something happened to it…”
Play straight with the Red Diaper Baby, whiny liberty addicts!

“almost constitutionally unable”
I see what you did there.
As a demonstration of the why we have the government that we do is a perplexing poll that shows that a majority of people think the SCOTUS should leave the mandate alone. But then you have another poll that shows a majority of people don’t like Obamacare in general. It’s a profound ignorance on the majority of people’s part that don’t realize that if you take down the mandate you pretty much take down the entire law altogether.
I think the employer mandate has been popular because people hate their bosses and enjoy anything that seems to shift the balance of power.
Democrats will probably blame the bosses in a few years when the taxes are too high on employer plans for them to be offered anymore and people get dumped into the private market.
I’ve never wanted to grant Omarxi any goodwill, because I’ve had a pretty good idea what he was from the very beginning back in 2008. And the reason he’s more generous with foreign than domestic enemies is that the foreign contingent doesn’t directly threaten his political control. They’re over there, not here.
Also in some cases he wants to share US sovereignty with some foreign governments
“And the reason he’s more generous with foreign than domestic enemies is”
That he shares their anti-American political views.
