I like his work, but he sure doesn’t come off very well as a person here.

Well I read Old Mans War and really found it underwhelming. That was well before I learned what a waste of sea water he is. Can’t seem to locate it but Andrea Harris really took him apart at one point for a “woe is me” screed he put up.
I thought Scalzi’s repeated mentions on his blog of how his wife is taller and more aggressive than he is were just weird. Now I think it’s clever marketing to his fanbase of SJWs.
He’s a scummy little creep. Applying his “logic” (re Larry Correia) to himself, he’s just upset that Sad Puppies makes it likely he’ll never get another Hugo.
I gave up on Scalzi’s weblog after I pointed out that some racist generalizations of his probably weren’t very fair to the white homeless people out there, and his response was that that’s okay because they probably weren’t on the internet to see anyway. “Punching up”, my ass.
I gave up on Scalzi as a human being when he accused Larry Correia of “encouraging rapists” for promoting the teaching of armed self-defense to women, because what we should really do is:
“I think we should teach men not to rape people. Apparently that makes me weak and stupid, if you’re a fucking moron.” – John Scalzi
Merely being that stupid might be forgivable, but I don’t think he’s actually that stupid. If we let him and any experts he chooses design a “How Not To Rape 101” class, and we put a prison’s rapists through it, do you think he’d be ready to release the graduates? Confident that anyone he cares about would be safe with them? Of course not. It’s a lie, a holier-than-thou posture intended to give him a feeble excuse to attack. That was where he crossed the line from stupid to evil.
I’m not a fan of his books. I read one of his books some time ago and I thought it was superficial, and thin on actual plot.
Scalzi’s Old Man’s War was one of two novels that I’ve ever read that made me so disgusted that I wanted to literally throw them against the wall. This was even long before I knew about his political leanings or his bad behavior.
You have to love how he proved there was no cabal controlling the Hugo voting process by openly calling for a cabal to control the Hugo voting process in response to Sad Puppies. The irony, it hurts.
Is it just me? The link sends me to a website / homepage with a lot of link buttons. No stories come up even if I click any of the buttons …
I liked Old Man’s War. Now I’m thinking of burning my copy in protest. You think I could video the book-burning an post it on his site? 🙂
It’s not just you. But then again, I knew Scalzi was pondscum when he published his “Rapists vote Republican” screed back a few years ago.
It has been my experience the less I know about an author, the better.
That’s true. There are several authors I’ve had to stop reading because of the political blather they’ve posted all over the Internet; particularly in the recent Hugo awards kerfuffle.
Scalzi, I stopped reading because I just found his later books so bad. I loved the idea of Redshirts, for example, but couldn’t get past the first two chapters of the free preview ebook on Amazon.
I liked Redshirts and found it a fun read. It’s basically a piece of fan fiction with the serial numbers filed off to avoid copyright infringement.

Somewhat related, the trailer for The Martian is out.
