I read at The American Interest (and, unfortunately, I can’t find a link), that one reason there is so much administrative bloat is to manage all the federal regulations with which colleges must comply.
Of course, they don’t need to give these administrators six figures…
Yes, complying with federal regulations is one of the justifications used to excuse administrative bloat. Whether or not that’s true is open for debate. Much of administrative bloat can also be simple empire building (Parkinson’s Law) as well as job creation for otherwise unemployable graduates such as Angry Studies majors becoming part of the diversity and sustainability staff.
