  1. That picture of Michelle Obama looking over patterns for the “official White House China” sums up everything that is wrong with what has become of the American Presidency.

Problem 1: The idea that each president needs their own legacy vis a vis an “official china pattern”.

Problem 2: The idea that the president’s wife is supposed to somehow serve as a socialite functionary within the White House, and that such a role is fundamentally essential to the running of our country.

Problem 3: That our populace is so enraptured with events as seemingly mundane as picking out china patterns that we need official photographers to document the event, and a gaggle of lackeys standing in the background to witness the event and be a part of the photograph (see also: people’s lunches as seen through Instagram and twitter).

I mean, it’s bad enough that the naming of a royal baby can dominate three days worth of news stories, but that’s also fairly par for the course in a monarchy. Has our society really gotten to the point where we’re okay with the deification of our rulers and celebrate familial dynasties as somehow good for our nation?

As a side note, I like the new layout, Rand. Subtle but effective change! 🙂

Bad was the Japanese zoo that was attacked for naming a baby monkey the same name, like they are expected to follow what goes on in some foreign country and understand all the cultural nuances of a country they were not interacting with.
