A cardiologist says that it’s not caused by lack of exercise, it’s caused by sugar and carbs.
I think the comparison with the tobacco industry is apt, but I disagree that it should be regulated. We just need to educate.

I’ve been on a low carb diet since last July. It’s great.
I’m also on a low-carb diet. I lose weight – _no matter how much I eat_ – as long as I keep the carbs down.
I don’t know why that simple anecdotal fact isn’t enough to refute most of the nonsense out there.
But carbs are the base of the food pyramid, and that was designed by the USDA. We’re not talking about a bunch of nutters here, these are top people working for the government.
You clearly want to have an off-topic conversation about the USDA, a department of the US government which promotes the needs of US farmers. But lets stay on topic: lets talk about the cardiologist Rand posted about, British doctor Aseem Malhotra. I don’t know if he is a top man, but guess what? He works for a national goverment department too. And his government’s policies, compared to the USA’s, are considerably farther to the left. Maybe you should focus on the merits of the argument itself instead.
Bob, the whole point is that politics is involved with nutrition. The science has been hijacked. If you don’t see that you need to study your history.
I suspect the reply you are responding to had invisible sarcasm tags.
You may expect too much of bob. Even if they were visible, he still wouldn’t understand it. It’s like Jim arguing that it doesn’t matter who the government sells out too, when everyone else is starting from the position of why is the government so large as to have something to sell or tell people what to eat.
That two government agencies disagree isn’t as important to me as why either even exists. bob may think it off-topic, but Rand stated very clearly: “I disagree that it should be regulated”. bob missed that too.
“like Jim arguing that it doesn’t matter who the government sells out too,”
Poor Jim has been reduced from claims that Obama is the most transparent and least corrupt President ever to all politicians are corrupt so we shouldn’t hold Obama (or now Hillary) accountable for their deeds. Eventually he might even criticize either of them without try to scapegoat the rest of the political system for Obama’s misdeeds.
Yep, food pyramid progressive himself, George McGovern. Here is an excerpt from Fathead (free, last time I checked on Hulu.)

Don’t worry about your health care, you’re in the best of hands.
Since January of this year I’ve been on a high-carb plant based diet and have lost 45 pounds and doing great. I respect people choosing other diets and doing equally as well. We all have to find what works best for ourselves.
Whether you are on a high-carb or low-carb path, the key factor seems to be giving up high-calorie density, low-nutrition processed carbohydrates and fats — something the standard American diet provides in great excess. The human body isn’t designed to be eating processed foods having calorie densities greater than 1000 calories/pound which are not found in nature. But the supermarkets are chock full with such foods. Since the calorie density of foods has increased greatly since the 1950’s it’s little wonder that obesity, CVD and type-2 diabetes has gone up in near lockstep.
Another significant factor contributing to obesity is the individual’s microbiome. It may be possible to alter it in a manner that leads to normal weight gain
