“Trolling” is a neologism, and I’m not quite sure what you mean.
Are you suggesting that when Vox Day “trolls” someone, we shouldn’t take him at his word and that he may not believe what he is saying, but rather he is only trying to raise someone’s ire?
Or are you merely suggesting that his goal is to offend, but you’re not suggesting that we shouldn’t take him at his word?
I’m saying that he is saying things he believes in a way that he know some (maybe even most) people will find offensive, with the intention of getting them to irrationally react. The point is that when you simply and politely ask him questions (as occurred here), he will generally simply answer equally politely.
It is easier to agree with you if one’s model of politeness is content-independent. That is, if you believe that it is possible to politely say something quite vile.
Whether you agree or disagree, I’m don’t think he said anything “vile” in that interview.
Well, I disagree, I wanted to take a bath after reading that. On the other hand, I do have a content-independent model of politeness, and I did find him quite polite.
Bob-1, do you always have the pruney fingertips when you’re typing? Have you killed many keyboards / tablets with wet fingers? I bet you spend a lot of time in the bath tub.
Eric, since you ask: I enjoy reading the opinions of people I don’t agree with, including Republicans, libertarians, and OWS morons.
I enjoy this blog very much. I think Vox Day’s writing is quite different. I won’t try to explain why here, but I’m sure you can find lots of criticism of him elsewhere.
I guess I would count as one of his “ilk” since I’ve read his blog nearly daily for the last 10 years, and from that experience I can state that he is not given to being controversial for controversy’s sake. Admittedly he is outside the mainstream, again not necessarily a bad trait. He will argue points of view politely with people until they paint themselves into a corner and then they turn on the personal attacks since they can no longer defend their premise.
Once that happens it’s Katy bar the doors and he will gleefully vivisect the one who first resorted to name calling. But again, in a respectful discourse, he will be respectful in turn.
Also in recent week, people here have expressed disdain for what passes as science fiction, and I would challenge you to check out some of the novels and short stories at CastaliaHouse.com as they are quite good and more like the sci-fi many of us enjoyed decades ago.
