  1. Funny how you never hear about stuff like this coming from Islamic countries.
Maybe if you read the Islamic countries newspapers you would.
As for “cure 90% of cancer types” I’ve heard that too many times before to take it all that seriously.

      1. I think this is the sort of thing Andrew had in mind:

At the end of last month, the Egyptian armed forces announced the “latest Egyptian scientific and research breakthrough for the sake of humanity.” They unveiled two devices, in fact. One (which resembles a staple gun with an antenna attached to it) they said can detect Hepatitis C and AIDS in patients, at a distance of up to 500 meters — the rod jerks in the direction of an infected person. The other device can purify a patient’s blood of the diseases.

At the event announcing the invention — with Minister of Defense General Abdel Fattah El Sisi and interim prime minister Adly Mansour sitting in the front row — an army officer announced the country had “vanquished” the diseases and promised the new cure would be available in military hospitals starting June 30. In a 14-minute documentary broadcast on state TV, a doctor tells a patient: “You had AIDS, but now it’s gone.”

        1. It’s been well documented that America doesn’t have a monopoly on quacks, flakes and fraudsters.

          1. I’ll take that also as a “no.”

Are you incapable of accepting that there is a fundamental (word chosen carefully) problem with Islam, modern or otherwise?

          2. . . fundamental (word chosen carefully) problem with Islam, . .

What, like there’s a fundamental problem with Democrats?
Like there’s a fundamental problem with climate science?
Like there’s a fundamental problem with Russia?
Like there’s a fundamental problem with antivaccers?
Like there’s a fundamental problem with the anti-gun people?
            Like there’s a fundamental problem with . . .?

You’re using examples, like this Israeli research to for Pete’s sake, to shore up your own prejudices.

If I’m so inclined I can point out fundamental problems with: NASA, Newspace, Indians, Australians, Mexicans, Women, Men, Democracy, markets, libertarians, Republicans, on and on and on, and you can bet your last dollar that I could find a crowd of people who’ll agree with me on the fundamental problems with each and every one of the above.
Like just about everyone else you think you’ve got a special frame of reference, a better and clearer view of the human world than everyone else, guess what – you don’t.
            (deliberate tip towards relativity).
Why does everyone go around so determined to believe their point of view is somehow special? Because as far as the battle for survival goes – something life has spent a billion years practicing, it sucks to give your adversaries opinions and lives the same level of importance you give your own, unlike in recent times, throughout most of life-on-Earths existence, each time one is born, one dies. So we’re evolutionarily programmed to be opinionated and self centered.

          3. Do you think that Muslim nations relative lack of success in cancer research is somehow significant evidence – of what? The inferiority of Muslim people, or of Islam?
If so, what solution are you proposing?

Do you also think that similarly modest contributions from Latin America is proof that Latin Americans, or Catholic’s are some how inferior to North Americans, Europeans and Protestants?

If so, what solution do you see for this other groups inferior contribution to global progress?

I see no problem, so see no need for some sort of imposed solution.

Looking through scientific and other achievement levels of various groups I found this:

Nobel Prizes have been awarded to over 850 individuals,[2] of whom at least 22% (without peace prize over 24%) were Jews, although Jews comprise less than 0.2% of the world’s population[3] (or 1 in every 500 people). Overall, Jews have won a total of 41% of all the Nobel Prizes in economics, 28% of medicine, 26% of Physics, 19% of Chemistry, 13% of Literature and 9% of all peace awards.[4]

My thoughts on reading this was that the comparative inferiority of members of other races and religions in winning Nobel prizes was also not a problem, but well done to the culture that did produce these people. Perhaps you take a different perspective and feel that somehow a solution needs to be found, a way of imposing progressive change on all those other cultures so that they can also contribute to global progress at the same levels as those brought up in Jewish culture?

          4. The inferiority of Muslim people, or of Islam?

            I think it’s a profound cultural issue.

If so, what solution are you proposing?

I propose no solution; if it is a problem, it is theirs to solve. I simply point out whose side we should be on in the region. Since so many don’t seem to realize that.

      2. Several Muslim countries have cancer research centers: Egypt, UAE, Pakistan, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, I don’t know if they’ve achieved any genuine breakthroughs, but I can say that about most countries, including Israel, like I said: I’ve heard it all too many times.

  2. Rand, you’re mistaken on this one. I’ve seen reports of a treatment used in islamic countries that has an even higher effectiveness at stopping cancer.

    Several, in fact.

Stoning to death, beheading, hanging, whipping to death, etc, etc, etc… all very effective in stopping cancer growth. One just has to overlook the side effects.

Obamacare will be implementing these treatments soon, and best of all, they’ll be free!

  3. The other day, Jim was telling us that Yemen just had to be let go to burn in flames because Barack was busy fighting MSRA. Alas, that problem was already solved. Wonder what Jim’s excuse for the sad sack of a President will be today.

    1. Well, if that’s true, then don’t complain that Pakistan exported nuclear weapons technology to North Korea, Iran, and Libya.

  4. On a more serious note, over the last two years, my university here in Seoul has experienced a big infux of Saudi students-all male. They’re all strudying engineeering, so somebody back in the home country is very much aware of the Arab world’s intellectual backwardness. The SAs are trying to set up an MIT equivalent, King Abdul Aziz University of Science and technology , but a place like MIT isn’t just a collection of buildings on a nice campus, its a mindset as well.

  5. This still needs to be reviewed to see how well it works outside the laboratory. But we can at least take it that Israelis are making a serious effort on research good for humanity.
