Marcia Smith has the story on yesterday’s NASA appropriation hearing, in which Chairman Culberson and General Bolden beclowned each other. More thoughts anon.

Here’s Culberson’s statement. I haven’t read it yet in detail.

What an incoherent, historically uncoupled mishmash. I’d hoped better of Culberson.
I hadn’t. It’s pretty much what I expected, based on his previous behavior.
Culberson was pretty bad.
Bolden did even better than usual.
He did well to remind that if they had funded Commercial Crew properly it could have been flying now instead of in two years time. He also did well to remind that the Constellation Ares-I pogo stick plus Orion combo wouldn’t be ready before CCrew.
They cannot even fund LEO manned exploration properly and Culberson wants an interstellar mission? Does he even have the slightest clue of how much something like that would cost with current tech? The on-orbit mass requirements are enormous. I liked the movie too but this is reality.
If Commercial Crew hadn’t been turned into a banquet of paperwork it’d be flying by now. The NASA administration took a COTS-like program and turned it into a Constellation-like program.
