Does this actually work? And if it does, then what does that say about the opposition, the Republican party and its motives?
Loathsome is the only word I can use to describe a party that is beholden to Wall Street, large corporations, lobbyists and environmental wackos; yet it blithely calls itself pro middle class.
I’ll grant that environmental wackos are more common on the Democratic side, though not very powerful even there (see: Obama proposing to allow Atlantic offshore drilling). Lobbyists are a bipartisan phenomenon, and the GOP handily outdoes the Dems in pandering to Wall Street (see: attempts to roll back Dodd-Frank) and big business (see: corporate tax “reform”).
To put it another way: any party that assembled a sufficiently broad coalition to win about 50% of the vote would qualify as loathsome under your definition; certainly both of our major parties do.

Obama got more Wall Street money than McCain, lots of proof for that. Who was the first secretary of the Treasury under Obama? You know, the one who forgot to pay his taxes? Oh, that’s right, Geithner. He worked for the New York Fed.
Rolling back Dodd-Frank? You mean the law that makes the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau immune to Congress and responsible only to the Fed? That bill? The one that keeps track of all of our credit card purchases? Yeah, that bill is really helpful to the middle class. Dodd-Frank didn’t even bring back Glass Steagall, which YOUR PARTY could have done! The one act which should have been enacted was not, thus proving my point about Dems being beholden to Wall Street.
Obamacare has raised prices as you damned well know.
Guess who said this? “Under my plan, energy prices will necessarily skyrocket.” Yeah, that was Obama. The one who is now killing coal. The coal that keeps energy prices low for many poor and middle-class Americans.
Sheesh, you are such a hypocrite. Tell those bong smokers in your basement to come up with better excuses.
Obama got more Wall Street money than McCain, lots of proof for that.
And then, after the Dems passed Dodd-Frank, the Wall Street money went to the GOP, where it has stayed.
Oh, that’s right, Geithner. He worked for the New York Fed.
Right, he was a public servant, working for a government regulator. It’s true that both parties tend to appoint Wall Street execs to top economic policy posts; Geithner was an exception.
Yeah, that bill is really helpful to the middle class.
It is despised by Wall Street, and therefore despised by the GOP.
Its an open secret that unions give far more than Wall Street, but still Wall Street gives only about 50/50 Dem/Rep (Goldman Sachs its 50/43, but they don’t call him President Goldman Sachs for nothing).
(see: Obama proposing to allow Atlantic offshore drilling)
Here’s all you need to know about Obama’s proposal (pull quote Baltimore Sun): “The government will gather further information to refine the plan and issue the Atlantic lease in six years.”
I’m curious Jim, why would something that won’t even be the slightest bit of reality in this presidential term nor the next would be interesting to you? Why even mention it? Do you plan on spending Sunday talking about the Patriots prospects for winning the Superbowl in 2021?
“I’ll grant that environmental wackos are more common on the Democratic side, though not very powerful even there ”
Lol wut? The environmental wackos are the most powerful faction of the Democrat party.
It’s Jim, he just lies. One only needs to look at Davos to know what he said is a lie.
Never, ever, underestimate this administration’s unrivaled skill at blatant hypocrisy and bold faced lies. This is the same mob that promised “If you like your plan, you can keep it, period!” time and time again, while knowing it was a lie. And just the other day, they condemned our ally, Jordan, for a possible prisoner swap with ISIS, and had the unmitigated gall to do so after swapping 5 terrorist commanders for Berghdal! And, to add the ludicrous, they declared the Taliban “not terrorists” to justify their abject hypocrisy.
Update from Maryland: my employer has informed me that I must switch from my current plan to an Obamacare plan if I want to continue to have the premiums deducted pre-tax (“cafeteria plan”). We looked up 4 Obamacare plans. Two are HMOs that won’t let me keep my doctor. One had a deductible of $8000 before it pays a nickel. All four are more expensive than my current plan. The only one that is even comparable to my current plan costs _$4500 per month_. Literally about three times as much as my current plan, which was “too expensive”. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a health care plan with that kind of premium. I guess I will now.
Anyhow, sounds like I’m keeping my old plan and eating the loss on taxes, because that is far far cheaper than switching to any of these new plans.
Mike, I feel your pain, believe me.
I lost my health insurance thanks to Obama’s pathological malevolence. The lying sack of purifying bovine excitement said, “If you like your plan, you can keep it, period!” but, of course, I got canceled – a plan I’d had for more than a decade, gone. That plan cost me about a grand every six months, and it was exactly what I wanted and needed; a plan to cover major medical expenses, and nothing else.
Get an obamacare plan? They’re garbage, as you’re seeing. It’d cost me four times as much (plus a massive deductible!) So, hell no I’m not flushing money down that toilet for worthless “insurance”.
Result? I’m uninsured, thanks to Obama.
If Obamacare wasn’t entirely useless, it might be used to cure the current occupant of the white house of his profound case of intracranial fecalith.
The tax penalty for being uninsured? Time for me to start reminding people that there isn’t one, not really; The Obamacare law forbids the IRS from using its usual methods of going after taxes, or even from charging interest, on the Obamacare tax penalty. All they can do it go after your refund, but if you’re careful on how much you let them withhold, you won’t have one to worry about. All they can do is send a nasty letter. Fine, I can use it for firewood.
Think about those subsidies. They will mostly go to people who do not make a lot of money, people who usually get money back from the government. This is a group of people with the potential for upward economic mobility. It wouldn’t be surprising for someone to go from an estimated $20k yearly income to $30-40k depending on whether or not they get a second job, a better job, or a promotion.
They have to pay the difference in the subsidies they qualified at the time they applied and the subsidies they qualify at tax time, if any. Say they work for six months without qualifying for subsidies and their subsidies were around $200 a month prior. They could be required to payback up to $1200 and that could wipe out any money they would get back on their tax return or put a serious dent in it.
This mechanism puts the squeeze on people transitioning out of the lower tax brackets who are accustomed and plan for getting money back on their taxes.
It is going to be pissing people off as long as Obamacare exists.
Defenders will claim you are just a statistic, an anecdote, that your experiences do not count. The words of victims should not be listened to but rather we should have blind faith in the information that flows from the Democrat party. They will then tell you how horrible your old plan was and how awesome the new one is despite knowing anything about either and nothing about the healthcare or health insurance industries.
