It’s long past time to abolish it. It was an idiotic idea from Elizabeth Dole, during the Reagan administration. It’s a major contributor to college binge drinking (and associated sexual regrets that some people want to redefine as rape).

I got caught by it here in Texas. I turned 19, was drinking as an adult, and then nine months later – bam! Sorry, you’re only sort of an adult and can’t drink until you’re 21. Hated that law ever since.
At 18, I signed myself over to the tender mercies of the US Army where I became a paratrooper. I trained to kill people and jump out of airplanes, but I wasn’t old enough to buy a beer. Strange how that works. If you aren’t old enough to buy alcohol, you shouldn’t be old enough to sign contracts like to join the military.
One wonders why a Federal drinking law -among many many other laws- is necessary.
It wasn’t, and isn’t.
