With Falcon 9 and Delta IV there is no need to continue buying RD-180. Its sad because it was cheap. But national security comes first.
I’ll be curious to see if they largely try to replicate the design of the RD-180 or whether they use a clean sheet.
There is no plan to replicate the RD-180. ULA/Blue Origin are going to develop a LOX/LNG staged-combustion engine, for a new Atlas design.
I’ll be curious to see if the reengined Atlas will be required to go through the same certification process as the Falcon 9. Cynacism suggests it won’t.
Well here it is Dec. 16th and still no word from USAF? Am I missing something? Is the actual date going to be the “next business day after CRS-5 is successful?” But this is not a political decision/process in any way, right?
