Heh. Did you read Blindsight? Are you familiar with Peter Watts? If not, I don’t want to spoil it for you, but poke around http://www.rifters.com/ — search a little, poke in the nooks and crannies, and you might find something rather different from what you expected.
I have no expectations, other than from what I read in that review. I don’t know why you think that I do.
Ok. I meant, I think anyone would be surprised by some of Watt’s contributions to the world (his fiction, his blogging, etc.) Anyway, you might like the vampires section of this page: http://www.rifters.com/blindsight/BS_main.htm
The vampires page is what sticks out in my memory, years after seeing it, but the whole BS_main.htm page is worth visiting, even if you don’t read Blindsight. As the review you linked to pointed out, all references to zombies and vampires eschew any supernatural explanation, which makes it much more appealing to me.
My guess is that you would hate some of Watts personal views (I don’t feel comfortable with them either, so this isn’t a left vs right thing) but you might enjoy his science fiction anyway.
Ever since I read “Vampire Domestication” (there’s also a pdf version), whenever I come across the phrase “hereditary aristocrat” I think “part vampire.”
