1. What is beyond simple truth is usually Evil. This is a sign of the last days. Another is that I am using an S5 to comment.

2. Hate crimes speak to either the motivations of the assailant or the status of the victim.
   The supreme court has upheld hate crime enhancements not for “thought” but for
   the aim to punish those who pick out unique victims. Much as society punishes those
   who select children or the elderly for victimization, so have certain other groups achieved
   the ability to enhance crimes against them.

   I don’t like hate crimes, but I just suggest to most people to not be Criminals first.

   1. One role of the judge is to determine the severity of the punishment. If the crime was especially heinous, the judge could increase the severity. That is why hate crimes are superfluous.

3. I’ve never understood the “logic” of hate crimes law. If I am attacked and killed it matters very little to me or my widow if it was done because the killer didn’t like my skin color or if the killer simply wanted my wallet, either way I am just as dead.

   1. true but it may matter a lot to the killer if they get a 10 year sentence of 25 year sentence.

      1. It should not matter at all. The idea of “equal justice under the law” should apply across the board. Murder is murder. Assault is assault. Rape is rape. All are crimes. It shouldn’t matter in the least why a criminal targeted a particular victim. The crime itself should set the sentence. As it stands, hate crimes are applied rather one sided. A minority victimizing a white person (even when overheard saying racial things) is far less likely than a white person victimizing a minority. This is also a violation of equal justice under the law.

         1. Many crimes add enhancements based upon the status of the victim.
            Murder of a police officer, public official, child, all are enhancements.

            Rape has enhancements if the victim is elderly or a juvenile.

            I think Hate crime laws tend to be lip service to activist groups, rather then being effective but they pass supreme court muster.
