With some major exceptions, you can pretty much take it as a rule-of-thumb that when you hear someone denouncing “McCarthyism” and how it threatened liberty in America, that someone is invariably a big State-f*cker. In other words, someone who’s alleged devotion to liberty is skin deep, if that.
It’s not that they’re against oppression, as current events show all too clearly. It’s that they want to be the ones doing the oppressing.
Ironically, the reality of Soviet subversion was worse than McCarthy imagined in his worst nightmares.
All the world knows that the Venona intercepts vindicated McCarthy, but in San Francisco, New York, and North Korea they pretend it isn’t so.
