The more I read about this and about energy policy, the more I get the impression it’s all politics. Lots of commercial and political interests, not much understanding of the technological and economic issues involved, and blatant dishonesty. It’s just like manned spaceflight, even though energy security is actually important. My best effort at understanding this is that there is plenty of fossil fuel to tide us over until we have fusion power or clean fission power with breeder reactors and waste transmutation. Except for specialised applications so called renewables are a waste of effort and largely driven by pork.
