How many qualified people can afford the $1 million a year that ambassadors to places like France are expected to spend out of their own pockets?
That’s a stupid expectation. They should be given a budget.
That is a totally separate issue than competence.
I am less concerned that ambassadorships go to big donors than the Obama administration is totally incompetent in training these people for their jobs and preparing them for testimony before congress. These people are rich and have the means and time to educate themselves in the geopolitics of the area and on the countries they are supposed to represent us in.
It doesn’t say much for their abilities if they are incapable of doing this on their own or for the Obama administration that they are incapable of basic training on how to deal with people of different cultures. These nominations are testifying before congress without having read a book, watched a movie, or even skimmed a Wikipedia post about their host country.
Even though these jobs go to donors, they still serve an important function to our government, especially in countries like China. It isn’t supposed to be a four year bazillion dollar party at taxpayer expense.
