Criminally negligent but for the most part unpunished. It’s time they were punished. It would be less criminal for them to yell fire in a theatre. They have no honor.
I have to rant. It’s one thing to occasionally get things wrong. That should be protected speech. But Goebbels was a criminal and so are they.
If you want to demand the status of “the fourth branch of government”, there should be checks and balances. If you want to demand special status under the law (e.g. federal Shield Laws, that legally define who is and isn’t a journalist) such as doctors and lawyers get, you should have a professional code of ethics that may be enforced by harsh measures, the way doctors and lawyers do.
