Who’d you get to do the printing? 3D Realms?
It took about three months for CreateSpace to go from material submission to Amazon availability for me. What is it that drives up the hassle and time for yours? My guess is that the print on demand drives the cost beyond your limits, but that is just a guess.
No, the costs are fine. It was just massive miscommunication and a poorly-designed web site (though not as bad as health.gov) that went on for a month.

I think it’s a good thing.
Then the delay is worth it. Best to get these things right before printing.
