I heard that it started as a group of people on “baby watch”, camping out to get the best view of a TV screen inside Abu Ghraib’s walls, and someone cut in line and a protest just spontaneously erupted as a result…
What? Too soon?
From what I have heard elsewhere the situation only hasn’t escalated further in Iraq because a lot of the Al-Qaeda Sunni militants have been too busy fighting in neighboring Syria.
Well, maybe the current government of Iraq will regain control. But this sort of thing is why so-called “warhawk” presidents can be more peaceful than pacifist presidents. The rest of the world doesn’t always leave US interests alone. But what sort and to what degree of exploitative actions they’ll take often depends on what they think they can get away with.
If the release of so much of local Al Qaeda leadership results in renewed violence, say at or beyond the levels of 2006 and 2007, then it is likely that the US will have to return or lose Iraq. And in such a case, the US would be returning under unfavorable conditions – which is a recipe for having costly wars which can be lost.
