Thoughts on why Islamists hate us. Unfortunately, Bush was right — they hate out freedom. And it’s appalling that the administration won’t put them on the terrorist list. Even the UK has done so.

Wait, if they hate our freedom *SO* much, why don’t they hate Europe? Why don’t they hate – really HATE! – Greece? Women driving cars, running businesses, holding office, and swimming nude! Old time religion and modesty ignored at least as much as it is over here. Alcohol available pretty much everywhere. Pretty sure they eat pork.
Yet the terrorists, who could probably get to Greece in an old Volvo or a fishing boat, pass them by to attack us. Has to be something else pissing them off.
We were not the Great Satan as recently as World War Two. It happened later. You know why. We installed a dictator, complete with sadistic secret police, in Iran and we sided with Israel (read:bombed their enemies) anytime it really mattered.
That does not excuse terrorism or the death of innocents, but we are never going to solve this problem if we convince ourselves that their motivations are something that they obviously do not care about.
Um, they do really hate, hate, Greece. The Turks and Greeks have been going after each other for years. They’ve hit England and Spain and Sweden, etc, etc, as well. You just don’t hear much about it because of how parochial the MSM is. And World War Two is the benchmark not because of what we did, but because of what the NAZIs did, which was to spread their “ideology” to the Middle East. Alas, we elected too many Democrats to do what needs to be done, which is De-NAZIfy the Arabs…..
Well, except that Mossadegh himself didn’t blame the US.
And I’m having just a little trouble remembering how hard (or who) we fought to keep the Shah in power … but I’m having no trouble at all remembering that the mullahs kill as many people every month as he did in 25 years.
I’m also having a little trouble identifying the countries we bombed for Israel in ’48-’49, ’56, ’67, ’73, ’82, either the First or Second Intifada, or ’06.
But other than that (and everything Robert pointed out), your analysis is flawless, and I’m sure the world would be entirely at peace if it weren’t for American pro-Zionist imperialism.
Don’t forget that we created the Shah by cleverly making Reza Shah have sex with the Queen of Iran, apparently more than once because they had eleven or so children. Of course this is after we tricked him into overthrowing the Qajar dynasty in the aftermath of WW-I, but before we forced Churchill and Stalin to remove him from the throne prior to the US entry into WW-II, a clever ploy by George W Bush’s ancestors to reroute Persian oil to the Soviets so it wouldn’t compete with Texas crude.
We carried out the earlier, post WW-I coup because the Qajars had failed to keep Iran free of Russian and Ottoman troops, which was contrary to the nefarious geo-strategic aims set forth when President Richard Henry Lee installed them on the throne in 1785.
So I can see why they hate us.
John, you may want to take a mulligan on that one…
I’ll take “Historical Analyses I Can Safely Ignore” for $500, Alex…
“We were not the Great Satan as recently as World War Two.”
Well, …yes. Qutb formed his anti-US theories just after WW2, between 1948 and 1950, which theories direct the Moslem Brotherhood today, in *direct* reaction to his experiences in American society, and said so, especially the freedoms of action available to women.
“It happened later. You know why. We installed a dictator, complete with sadistic secret police, in Iran”
Again, …no. Khomienei formed significant portions of his ideas from those of Qutb(see above), and from other Moslem commentators on the Koran and other Moslem holy texts, such as the respected Ibn Taymiyyah. Since Taymiyyah lived during the time of the Mongol invasions, as you can imagine, his advice in this time involved conflict with or dhimmitude for, all non-Moslems. This is reflected strongly in the Ayatollah’s text production, and the actions of the Iranian state he set up.
” and we sided with Israel (read:bombed their enemies) anytime it really mattered.”
As we should have. Israel, …in spite of being founded by socialists, was a friend to the US throughout WW3, doing sterling service in breaking the ability of the Egyptian Army, and its socialist camp allies, to project power onto the Arabian Peninsula. They are battling groups who have, at every opportunity, allied themselves with totalitarian opponents of industrial society around the world, whether they were the Ottomans, the Nazis, “the socialist camp”, or the Salafists and Khomeinist scriptural literalists of today. These are proper opponents for any defender of industrial society. The US is still the chief defender of industrial society around the world, even while being sabotaged in this defense from the inside.
” but we are never going to solve this problem if we convince ourselves that their motivations are something that they obviously do not care about.”
True. However, discovering their true motivations inside the ME Studies Departments dominated by PLO allies, or in other bastions of the Left, is highly improbable.
It then depends on what those who desire to build a new Caliphate (a common theme of the Salafists and the Khomeinists) said, before they found the Left so strongly against the US in 2001. After that, they began to issue pronouncements meant to specifically fit in with the prejudices of the opponents of Israel, whether Left or Right. Before their discovery of potential allies, inside industrial society, and against its continued existence, Al Queda did not mention the conflict with Israel 1/100th as much as after their discovery of these potential allies.
We can’t put them on the terrorist list, they are only burning Christian children alive….

Judging by their choice of targets, they really really hate people who are unarmed. Maybe we should stop offending them.
