This is another area of government overreach that I’d like to see rolled way back.

Rand, I can easily justify this purchase. The Game Wardens work in remote areas. In CA, they can encounter Grizzlies, hence the large caliber.
They often work alone in areas where there are armed gangs that have marajuina growing operations or meth cooking operations on public lands. The can easily need that firepower as an equalizer.
The crime is not that they are so-equipped, it is that California residents can not be likewise equpiied.
Um…. the only place they’ll encounter grizzlies in California is the zoo. Grizzles went extinct in Ca in about 1922.
On the gang issue and the need for citizens to have the same access, I agree.
At the same time, an angry black or brown bear isn’t exactly a walk in the park, either. (Hell, or a mountain lion, though .223 should be plenty enough for that.)
I agree the only real problem is that ordinary Californians can’t own the same rifle.
