  1. So what are preferable alternatives to the listed items. #2 is the stumper. I started eating whole wheat years ago. Two advantages over white bread are a) less abrasive on the intestines, and b) vastly reduces dental plaque.

    1. You would think it would always be more abrasive. I always thought the benefit was sort of akin to the dimples on a golf ball.

  2. Joke of an article.

“a large part of the population may be gluten sensitive “ Yup. And global warming may be happening.

“[Agave Nectar] is harmful primarily because it is loaded with unnatural amounts of fructose.” ‘Unnatural.’ Yeah, right.

“trans fats, which are highly toxic.” Citation goes to article on percentage of trans fats in oils, not on their toxicity. Toxicity, outside of quacks who talk about ridding their bodies of toxins, is measured by dose. Do tell, what is the level at which trans fats supply at 50% lethal dose? Do you think it will be more or less by weight than say, aspirin?

    1. The very word “toxins” in an article does tend to set off my alarm bells.

Something is desperately wrong with conventional thinking, though, IMHO. The more health crazed we become, the more we become obese and allergic.

  3. This article confirms many of my suspicions. I think the majority of what we think is good for us is really just a marker of cultural inclination, backed up by studies with pervasive confirmation bias.

  4. The comments at the link were almost 100% negative also. I thought he made good points, but then again I’ve been eating much more low carb/paleo for going on 10 months now. Down 28 pounds, halved my blood pressure medicine and quit cholesteral meds altogether. Blood tests are looking great. Feeling great as well. Only negative side effect has been evening leg and foot cramps which I hear are common for up to a year. I do have an affinity for Atkins snack bars (definitely not Paleo!) which made the list at #10, but I’ve been trying to ween myself from those anyway.

Yes, it is possible to do without wheat, lettuce is my personal favorite substitute. Even Jimmy John’s provides a lettuce wrap alternative to bread. If dental plaque is your worry…I don’t know, try flossing!

  5. After reading Gary Taubes’ book at the behest of the Instadude I adopted a version of his recommendations (lose sugar, carbs and starch) and since June of last year have dropped 40 lbs (255 to today’s 215). I do a whey/soy protein mix with a bit of fiber powder and a veggie/fruit extract powder shake for b’fast and lunch, and whatever wife-unit cooks for dinner.

I’m fond of cheap bourbon and pizza (thin n crispy instead of pan, it counts as cutting back, right? If the sequester counts as a cut, so does this.) and nacho cheese doritos, continue to imbibe and my weight has apparently plateaued. Guess I’m going to have to do something different now, like exercise… my goal is 190-200. (height is 71″)

Having lived on reece’s peanut butter cups, mountain dew, brach’s bridge mix, cap’n crunch and coffee-flavored cream and sugar for decades I’m down to 1 can of diet coke a week, black coffee (curse you Mark Harmon of NCIS) and a tendency to eschew sweet in favor of savory.

Quit smoking May Day, 2001 after which the weight ballooned thanks to sociables crackers and squeeze cheese, aka, Cheez Whiz. Hey I stayed off the coffin nails so it worked. 😉
