I’m so glad they didn’t ban my 3D printed Starship Troopers nuclear bazooka (conventional warheads optional.)
I’ve mentioned before that a machinist with a starter set of tools can make any tools s/he needs to produce any other thing. 3D printers give a graphic example of that in that they can print their own parts. The first thing you do with your six inch cube printer is print parts for a 12 inch cube printer.
There are cheap desktop CNC machines available which are a lot more viable for manufacturing the inner workings of a gun. These 3D printers that output plastic are only useful for making the uninteresting bits in a gun. There are some 3D printers which can work with metal powder but I wonder how suitable they would be for this purpose.
The ban is nonsense. What will happen is more intrusive scanning at airports etc.
