In one of his very profane and very funny comedy videos, the late Richard Pryor described when his wife caught him in bed with another woman. He asked, “Who are you going to believe, me or you lying eyes?”
That’s the problem facing Obama and the Press. People are believing what they see every day over the lies. No amount of narrative spinning is likely to overcome people realizing how they aren’t better off today than they were four years ago.
People are believing what they see every day over the lies
Yes, people care much more about their personal experiences than about anything the candidates or the media say. That is the biggest question in this election: when voters ask themselves how they’re doing, do they compare today to mid-2008, or to the more recent past. “Things are worse than before the collapse” is a vote for Romney; “Things are a bit better than a year or two ago (and much better than three years ago)” is a vote for Obama.
Mid 2008? That was when Obama claimed if elected he would take responsibility and fix everything. That is not what happened…
They could look a little farther back before the housing crisis and wonder why Obama couldn’t even get us back to, “The worst economy since Herbert Hoover” to quote Obama circa 2004. Sure would be nice to be back in 2004 and no I’m not referencing some racist event in 2004.
We all know that little trick. Some Republican mentions their fondness for someone from the past and Democrats say, “George Washington? You mean the slave owner? Racist.” Because Democrats view history that way. So when Obama says Romney is out of the 50’s and belongs on black and white TV, that is Obama saying Romney is racist and wants to take us back in time before the civil rights movement. That is a common theme from Obama.
Back on topic, did you read about Obama’s first class action suit? He said banks were racist for not giving more loans to minorities. He won the case and hundreds of his class action clients got home loans. Do you know how many didn’t get forclosed? Its a scary number. Turns out Obama was a pioneer in forcing banks to give loans to people who can’t afford them. Why isn’t the media telling the story of Obama’s first class action lawsuit?
How have Democrats framed this? Predatory banks taking advantage of minorities by giving them loans they know can’t be paid back.
Thanks to the internet the media is losing control of the narrative. People can go watch Obama’s race baiting speechess. They can go look at what he said when he was in the Senate about the economy or deficits. They can even go look at what he said three years ago about how awesome things would be today with everyone driving around in electric cars that they paid for with their jobs and tax credits. How much better the envrionmnet would be now that we switched over to solar and wind power.
Not only are things not better than three years ago, they are not where Obama claimed they would be if we followwd his policies.
And what’s sad is Obama’s administration is still suing banks for allegedly redlining mortgages around minority communities. And the gov’t has bought up some 800 billion dollars in toxic loans. This makes the U.S. gov’t on of the largest holders of mortgage loans. We’re essentially nationalizing the mortgage/real estate industry.
Given that median family income is down 5% over said past three years, I guess you won’t be surprised that Obama loses by ca. 10 percentage points in November then?
So Jim, if we are in fact better now than we were 2-3-4 years ago does that mean it’s George Bush’s fault?
Things are better than a year or two ago? Recovery summer was two years ago, Jim. We were told things were getting better two years ago. The number of unemployed is going up just this summer, Jim. Gas is at an all time high, when it was at a low when Obama took office. Manufacturing is reporting today a third month of decline in a row. That’s today Jim! We have more Americans are welfare this year than last year, Jim.
Where’s the improvement that Obama promised in 2008? He’s had 4 years. It is time for him to own his failure. He drove the car into the ditch. He’s made the pie smaller while making sure his pals at Solyndra got a piece. Where is Pookie’s piece of pie, Jim?
We were told things were getting better two years ago.
They were, compared to 2009!
Gas is at an all time high, when it was at a low when Obama took office.
Gas prices were low in early 2009 because the economy was in free fall. Higher demand, and higher gas prices are a side-effect of the recovery.
He drove the car into the ditch
The car was in the ditch before he took the wheel.
GDP shrank at a 7% rate in the last quarter of 2008; it’s been growing for the last three years. We were losing 800,000 jobs a month at the end of 2008; now we’re averaging 150,000 new jobs a month. Unemployment peaked at 10% in 2009; it’s 8.3% now.
Even Romney admits that the economy is improving.
The question is whether independent voters think it’s improving, and fast enough, to give Obama another term. People don’t vote based on statistics, they vote based on their personal experiences.
This has been the most anemic recovery in U.S. history. Gas prices are high because demand increased on the international market but remained relatively flat in the U.S. Analyst say that gas would have hit 5$ a gallon if the U.S. had experienced a traditional recovery. Quantitative Easing also contributed greatly to the increase in gas prices. As is what is driving the increase of gas right now because investors are sure that another round of easing is expected.
Obama was a Senator in the Congress before he became president. He pushed for and voted on the very policies that lead to the subprime meltdown. He had a huge hand in loosening lending requirements by suing banks for discriminatory lending practices back in ’95. I’ll be generous and admit that both parties have their share of blame to go around with this mess. But it’s typical Obama to point the finger at everyone else and act like his stuff don’t stink — great leadership skills indeed.
We were promised the Stimulus would have us at 6% right now. But instead unemployment has been slowly tacking back up. Disgruntled workers are at an all time high and if included in the statistics would put us up in 15% unemployment territory. New job creation is below population growth. Not to mention food prices are taking a ever larger slice out of people’s income. And yadda yadda yadda.
My those are some mighty fine rose-colored glasses you have there, Jim.
150k is treading water. It isn’t even enough to keep up with new workers entering the work force. That sir, is not a recovery.
Surely Obama could at least do a better job than Bush…
They were, compared to 2009!
And now they are getting worse. Obama increased our debt by $4 trillion in less than 4 years, and this is on top of several attempts to monitize the debt with the various quantitative easing efforts. The dollar has been de-valued 3 times since 2009, which is why gas and food prices are higher. The people see these increases every week, when they fill up there cars and put food on their family’s table. They don’t need Romney to tell them what’s happening to them.
Gas prices were low in early 2009 because the economy was in free fall. Higher demand, and higher gas prices are a side-effect of the recovery.
I [don’t] hate to burst your delusional bubble, Jimbo, but gasoline prices spiked in anticipation of supply shortfalls due to Isaac and the refinery explosion in the People’s Republic of Venezuela, combined with the usual anticipated increase in demand for Labor Day Weekend. Neither the shortfalls in supply nor the increases in demand had any effect on prices, mostly because there was no increase in demand. This economy isn’t growing, ace. It’s headed for a depression.
Don’t forget the $5T+ in extra debt! Wouldn’t be a poop sandwich without the poop.
Jim is happier with things as they are now because his beloved State grows ecver bigger. It’s a wonder he is able to extricate the Mailed Fist from his rectum long enough to sit down at a computer long enough and type the Hive’s latest party-line every day.
My fondest hope would be for the Democrat Party to pay tribute to the city hosting its convention by standing up and saying, with one voice: “We are all Charlottans now!”
