Knowing we don’t know allows us to learn.
“I think that there remain, at least for now, some things beyond the realm of science.”
I know what you’re saying. I’m an engineer also. I work with things that can be measured. But I think there are some aspects of reality that will never lend themselves to measurement by instruments. I’m probably in the minority, but whatever.
I guess there are some who would say, “If it can’t be measured, then it doesn’t exist.” I don’t hold that position, but I don’t think it is an unreasonable one.
Another engineer here, Tom. You may be in the minority but you’re in good company.
Regarding the statement “if it can’t be measured, it doesn’t exist” … I personally think that is a very limiting definition best suited to narrow minds. Rather I would say if it can’t be measured, then we don’t sufficiently understand it. At one time, the neutrino could not be detected, let alone measured. Before that were x-rays. As Rumsfeld supposedly said, … there are things we don’t know that we don’t know …, which certainly applies to the physical world today as much as it does to military intelligence.
A little humility is good for the scientific mind.
It may not be that much of a mystery. I hear that one of the elephants noticed that Anthony had changed his status to “deceased” on his Facebook page…
‘figured it was the tweets…
The article doesn’t provide enough information about whether he was always visiting the two herds, a routine part of their lives, and then suddenly stopped coming. If that was the case, they noted his absence and returned to his house to see if he was okay, which removes the spooky element of the story but still indicates that elephants are very, very smart and socially aware.
An elephant never….um, something…something…
