I imagine most of those unemployment benefits come from programs to hire for a little while the long term unemployed. My impression is seasonal tourism businesses are exploiting it like crazy.
And let’s not forget about the biggest upper middle class/millionaire welfare program of all, public colleges. Public colleges are predominately populated by upper middle class and rich kids who typically only pay about 20% of the total cost of the education.
I saw an article yesterday–don’t remember where it was, talking about corporate welfare, and how in small doses it might actually be good, and they mentioned the semiconductor industry. Every time I hear THAT, I’m reminded of an article from probably 5-8 years back by the head of, I want to say, Centaur, but that might not be the right name, where he savaged the idea of subsidies.
