Ascii art goes much further. People are creative. The difference is I doubt any ascii art will be worth much at auction. It’s just data and anyone can copy it exactly.

Without emoticons, it would be much more difficult for the trolls to pretend that they are civil — which they currently do by ending their snarky or even hateful rants with a smiley face. 🙂
