It’s the end of an era for the University of Wisconsin’s TA union. As Ann notes, it was at the center of the thuggery in Madison earlier this year.

“Our membership was keenly aware of the sort of resources and energy it would take in order to hold on”
“…and without mandatory paycheck withholding, we simply had no assurance those resources would be available. We feel great sorrow in admitting that our members see other, more rewarding uses for the small, and really insignificant amount of funds that previously had been automatically taken from them.”
Curt Thompson quoted:

I wonder why they had to quit? Must have been those annual votes they had to run. Pretty onerous stuff there for a democratic organization to do.
I’ve never understood the “one man, one vote, one time” nature of union elections. So Walter Reuther, with the Roosevelt administration at his back, got the UAW recognized by Ford, GM and Chrysler in the 1930’s. Why does that mean the UAW still represents their employees three-quarters of a century later? Lower-case “unions” not having to stand for recertification periodically is about like making the U.S. presidency a permanently Republican seat just because Abe Lincoln saved the capital-U Union.
