Why we should read it. It’s not a new thought, but it’s always a useful reminder that it helps us be prepared for the future. Of course, from that perspective, “speculative fiction” might be broader and more useful genre.

But for every one scifi novel that correctly describes the future, ten incorrectly describe the future and yet still influence hose within the space-interested community to think that that’s the direction that we should go. Worldships is a good example.
How many people think that we should put all of our money into a single large ship because that’s what inspired them when watching 2001 or the likes? And so we do…and then there’s cost and schedule overuns and then we have to cancel it and buy non-scifi seats from the Russians? Falcon 9 is just a plain rocket. No wings in space. Not so huge that it can take us to Mars, and yet it is opening up our future in space. I would rather an experienced aerospace enineer with a bent towards market economics be in charge of NASA than someone who was inspired with visionary scifi novels of meeting aliens on Mars.
