Some useful thoughts on the gay marriage issue, from Kevin Williamson. I haven’t had time to think about it a lot, but I suspect I will agree (and that, like my opinion on Roe v Wade, is entirely independent of my opinion on the underlying issue), because I don’t think this will be solved until we separate church and state in the matter.

Rand, here’s an interesting perspective on the gay marriage issue:

I am opposed to gay marriage on religious grounds, but this article has other reasons to wonder if this is such a good idea.
I don’t know Don. I think the separation of the two is important. The government should not be in the business of marriage in the first place. A much stronger civil union contract, IMO would be ideal. I am more interested in financially protecting the children we are already placing in the custody of gay couples and those even larger numbers that will come in the future. After all that is governments primary interest in the contract, to ensure the welfare of the offspring and to ensure they do not become a burden on the state. Marriage I think is a separate, though just as important an issue. Anyone who is not religious makes a church wedding less valid when it is performed simply as a ritual rather than a spiritual commitment before your religious peers.
