She is Russian they are used to this.
There are Beluga Whales in captivity, and no, the fine young lady specimens at Sea World don’t interact with them without dive suits.
And yes, sadly, I still paid money to watch…
I want to marry that woman. Talk about superior genes.
BTW, that was very cold water and that woman can hold her breath for over 10 minutes. She is a world-record holding free diver.
She must have been well paid. I’ve been submerged in seawater that was 39F (10 degrees warmer); it was not something I want to repeat. Great publicity for her, though! Bet she gets movie offers.
The comments at the article mention that the women’s record for freediving is just over eight minutes–this woman beat it by 27%. Pretty significant–too bad the women trying to break the freediving record never thought to use yoga.
I was watching some survival episodes on what happens when you’re submerged in freezing water–something about the 1-10-1 rule. Ok, here’s a link: http://www.shipwrite.bc.ca/Chilling_truth.htm
One minute of uncontrolled hyperventilation, 10 minutes of useful activity with steadily diminshing degrees of coordination and dexteriy, 1 hour of consciousness. If you can’t self-rescue within the first 10 minutes you attempt to freeze your arms to the ice so you can stay above water until rescued.
I’ve swum with bottlenosed dolphins before, some of it in only mildly cold water, wearing only slightly more than her…that was extreme enough for me, thanks.
I can agree with M Puckett, but Google “Lynne Cox” for even more shrinkage-inducing female aquatics…
Actually, being in water that cold could cool down the body enough to reduce the metabolism rate to the point at which one could go longer on a given amount of oxygen. So other free divers, if they were crazy enough, might want to give it a try.
But jeez, it would be cold. The yoga has to be a key part of it.
Holy moly…those may the luckiest friggin’ whales in the HISTORY OF WHALES!
Then again, they may have the same reaction to her skinny, white, underfed body, that I have about most if the current crop of American actresses.
“…aw, jeez, somebody FEED her! Quickly”
Yeah, I wondered if maybe the cold had something to do with the longer time underwater. There’s a first aid maxim–they’re not dead till they’re warm and dead–that kind of applies. Still, it’s easier for me to believe that an English newspaper would lie than that a woman could freedive for ten minutes in subfreezing water.
Her body doesn’t look underfed to me.
Though, OK, there is a little cellulite on her butt. But that’s just one of the dimensions of her bravery…
Rand,
I was ‘talking” from the whale’s male stand point on her being underfed. A female beluga would be WAY bigger than she is.
I think she looks pretty good too. But I’m not a male beluga whale.
