Spirit has finally given up the ghost (so to speak). It had a pretty good run, considering that it was originally only supposed to last a few months.

Just think; when a human finally lands there, if they ever actually track down the thing, it will only take someone 2 seconds to lift it off the rock and dust the sand from the panels. Perhaps one day someone will awaken that Spirit.
They claim it got cold damage. Well, the real scoop was here:

Well, I’m pretty sure this is the outcome most expected after she got stuck in that sand dune, but it is still kind of sad for her mission to have ended this way. It’s still hard to argue that it is these type of missions that NASA (read: JPL) excels at.
Spirit should now join Pioneer, Voyager, Galileo, etc as a name of honor in the list of unmanned missions that are expanding our knowledge of our Solar System.
OT topic, but has anyone heard if the Voyagers have after been able to determine if they have truely crossed into interstellar space yet, or are they still inside the Heliosphere?
