Unfortunately, the man in the White House is no Gary Cooper.

This is hardly news…
[[[in the meantime it is transparently clear that whether incompetence or malfeasance is more to blame, the government of Pakistan cannot safely be trusted — by anyone, on anything.]]]
But just as with the Clinton and Bush Administrations, the illusion of an alliance with Pakistan serves to provide cover for pursuing terrorists within its border and so will continue.

This is correct, which is why they did not know that OBL was there, he could not trust them either.
The real question is what sort of solution India would support. Our options are limited to what India will partner with us on, because Pakistan really is too big and too far for America to handle unilaterally.
American air and naval assets + Indian land forces and occupational manpower could deconstruct Pakistan fairly quickly. Especially if the Pashtuns were given to Afghanistan and the Baluchs and Sindh were given independent statehood within a Federal India.
But only if India wanta that sort of thing. Assimilating the Muslim crazies in the Punjab would be no small task.
Short of deconstruction I’m not sure what our other options are. I doubt that India would support “regime change” that just shuffled the players around, and that wouldn’t help us either.

They have nukes.
And they have China which would take a dim view of the U.S. and India occupying Pakistan.
