At recent congressional hearings, NASA officials have said they were doing their best to steer the Constellation money toward the agency’s next big project: a heavy-lift rocket that one day could take astronauts to the moon and beyond.
When pressed, however, Doug Cooke, the agency’s head of exploration systems, said NASA “would be happy and less constrained without the restrictions.”
Is there any real difference in between the money being spent on Constellation or a heavy lift vehicle? If it is going to get wasted either way, may as well stick with the status quo and wast it overtly on Constellation.
If that $1.4M a day were all NASA wasted it would be a bargain…
The NASA budget is around $52m/day. What proportion of that is significantly wasted? $1.4m is only 2.5% of that budget.
The Shuttle costs $200M a month.
How come I didn’t read about these new orbital supply satellites here? This is way cool. Not just a robotic fuel depot, but a robotic parts depot, and itself supplied by a reusable module.
Yours,
Tom
