  1. Anonymity + Audience == …

Let’s just say that some people dive for the worst under those circumstances.

  2. The kid has aunts and uncles that work for NASA his dad works at ULA, and he wants to work at ULA in the future.

It appears that the long-standing forum members over there have done a pretty good job of putting him in his place and smoking him out as the whiny little troll that he is…

I can’t access the forum right now (problem on my end). However, if what John says is true, then can someone explain this to me:

Perfect example of why forums are useless.

After all, a forum is just a gathering of people to participate in free speech. Is free speech useless? Or is gathering of mostly like minded people useless?

One can still support free speech while at the same time commenting that much of that speech is uttered by persons with intellectual disability.

  5. Pro Libertate Says:

How anyone can hate what SpaceX is doing is beyond me.

If you’re working for a competitor like ULA (or aspire to like this kid reportedly does), then it’s easy to hate a company that an undercut your prices by huge margins without the need for government subsidizies or guarantees.

  6. If you check, that forum is moderated. And yes, he was put well in his place. Keith J spanked him throughly.

  7. The whole premise of that thread reminds me of the old Kelly Lebrock shampoo commercial.

SpaceX’s new corporate slogan should be: SpaceX: “Don’t hate us because we’re beautiful!”

  8. It’s arfcom. The largest gun board on the web. Anything goes in their general discussion forum.

All kinds of both high and low brow discussions on everything going on all the time.

You should have seen the epic thread on if a plane on a treadmill could take off.

Indeed, the other members of the forum pointed out the fallacies in the person’s argument. Still, I’m not sure how that makes the forum useless. A person presented his ideas. His ideas, once brought into the arena, were reviewed and rejected by a greater population. That seems like a useful means of considering ideas. To me, it shows that the greater population actually understands the merits of SpaceX, which is a great thing to know. Maybe not the best mechanism for testing ideas, but certainly not a useless mechanism.

  10. There are actually a lot of people with a science and engineering background on that forum that largely ‘get it’.

Lots of zeros too but that is a function of size.

Arfcom is a really, really big forum.

  11. Economic growth and hope for the future prompts happiness, however the reverse is also true. The working environment at “NASA” is likely getting fairly pressured, desperate and unhappy by now. This is not a time that one will necessarily see people at their best. Hopefully the change will be quick and real hope and economic prosperity can soon be found on the other side.

  12. Actually, the thing I found most “useless” about that forum was that every second commenter was quoting the entire thread to add a “me too” reply.

Similar disdain for basic etiquette is what keeps me off NSF and other forums. The norms of usenet live on only on mailing lists where annoyed people can make private replies to say “hey buddy, keep it down”.. and even then, only when there’s a history of it.

Having one of the founding fathers of usenet on your mailing list seems to help too *cough*Henry Spencer*cough*.

  13. I’ve been a paid member of arfcom for at least 10 years, since I’m a competitive shooter. I’ve also been a lurker here since you started this blog.

I’m a life long resident of Merritt Island.

I don’t work in the space industry, and my job does not depend on NASA or any private NASA contractor.

More than a few of my neighbors are acting a little weird these days. Change scares people.

The damaged and impassable bridge on St. Rte. 528 and Courteney (RT.3) is seriously affecting traffic for workers to and from the Space Center.

Maybe that drove LoxDox to vent. Still, I wonder why he chose a gun forum.

  14. Finally got to read the thread. Still don’t see why it would be called useless. The forum software could be better, but “useless” isn’t really an apt description for that problem.

I was rather happy to see many people defending SpaceX and private competitive space access.
