Kay Bailey Hutchison will not be running for reelection. Why?

Instead of putting my seat into a special election, I felt it was my duty to use my experience to fight the massive spending that has increased our national debt; the government takeover of our health care system; and the growth of the federal bureaucracy, which threatens our economy.

Hey, if she’s worried about spending, I know a line item at NASA that could be profitably cut. It starts and ends with an “S.”

  1. When I lived in Texas, it was my perception that KBH was not that well liked by Texans. Not necessarily disliked, but only a few folks strongly supported her. The GOP was solidly behind her, however, and as a result was virtually impossible for a Republican challenger to mount an effective primary campaign bid.

    The emergence of the Tea Party in the 2010 elections probably scared her off. She likely would have to work really hard for re-election, and perhaps her showing in the 2010 Texas Governor’s primary (31 percent) represented the high-water mark for the votes she could hope for in a future race.

  2. If memory serves (and I could be wrong) she was an “open borders” (AKA ‘Rule of law? What rule of law?’) Republican; her 2010 primary for governor ended in disgrace when she was curbstomped by 21 points.

    Yes, that must be why she has been reelected to multiple terms.

    Well, she couldn’t win the primary for governor. And she’s probably thinking she may be primaried out if she runs again. So whether or not she’s like by “most Texans,” she doesn’t seem to be currently very popular with Texas Republicans.

    For whatever her reasons she chose to run in a Republican Primary against a relatively popular sitting Republican Governor. She lost, but the primary fight caused problems for the Republicans (that they eventually overcame). That could be the reason she has decided not to run for reelection in 2012 (I have no idea), or after what will be almost 20 years in the Senate she may have just decided it is time for a change. Either way it has nothing to do with her position on Space Policy.
