Alan Boyle discusses the impact on the space program, and policy going forward. I don’t think if will have much effect on policy given that she is now in the minority, but I hadn’t considered the implications for whether or not Kelly will fly this spring. But in retrospect, it’s obviously a major issue.

Ms. Giffords floor remarks before final passage of S. 3729 (search Giffords, she’s granted 7 minutes by Mr. Gordon).
Giffords shouldn’t even be on that subcommittee. It’s a blatant conflict of interest. The day I met her in Tuscon with her astronaut husband in tow, she couldn’t get out of the place fast enough. That crowd was quietly humoring Kelly and seemed as happy as ever to be talking to an astronaut.. until he started slagging “welders” and other people who work with their hands. I guess that’s how they do politics in AZ.. make a bad estimate of the class of the listeners and then beat up on the perceived lowers. Shame there was everyone from students to New Space entrepreneurs in that room.. the talk before was from one of those lowly metal workers.
Hopefully Giffords will live, but hopefully she won’t be able to get sympathy time from the Science Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics.
Probably my Air Force roots showing, but his flight eligibility was the first thing I thought of when the news mentioned he was commanding in April.
Wishing a speedy recovery to those injured, comfort for the relatives of the lost, and justice for those who did this.

Well, she obviously will not be getting any
“sympathy time” from you.
