Thoughts on a guy named Mohamed Mohamud.
“The main thing was the way he said he hated Americans,” Stull said. “It was serious. He looked me in the eye and had this look in his eye, like it was his determination in life — ‘I hate Americans.'” Now that we have lots of guys named Mo, it probably makes sense to wonder how many of them share this Mo’s “determination in life.”
It’s a question that the multi-cultis don’t like to ask.
Perhaps we should not be allowing people of this background into the U.S. Just a thought.
Kurt9: According to this article, the bomber came to America at age 5. So now we’re supposed to prevent any immigrants from Muslim countries?
Also according to the article, the FBI was “tipped off.” By whom? Perhaps some other Muslims in America?
We need to distinguish between “intent” and “capability.” Mohamud had no capability to do anything. This Serbian immigrant had a garage full of bombs ready to go.
Perhaps some other Muslims in America?
Perhaps. It’s unclear, particularly since he seemed pretty free with his opinions about hating America. How did he acquire such a hatred, having come here at five?
We need to distinguish between “intent” and “capability.” Mohamud had no capability to do anything.
He could have acquired it. Intent matters.
Rand – well, considering he’s all of nineteen years old, and only barely past the “let’s go shoot up the high school” stage of life, it’s entirely possible he’s just pissed off at the world.
There are a rather small percentage of people who hate America enough to attack it. But when you have six billion people in the world, or 300 million in America, a small percentage is still a fairly impressive number. (1% of 300 million = 3 million.)
We need to distinguish between “intent” and “capability.”
“We” do? I’m glad you don’t work in law enforcement.
it’s entirely possible he’s just pissed off at the world.
Great defense strategy there counselor. Good luck with that. In the mean time your client will remain in custody.
Curt – what made you think I don’t want Mohamud to go to jail? He did try to kill people, and so should be punished accordingly.
My point here is that wetting our pants about some kid that can’t build a bomb is distracting us from people who can and have built bombs.
There’s no evidence that he can’t build a bomb. The FBI helping him out is no more an indication of competence in that capability than is renting a U-Haul under your own name for the purpose of committing a suicide attack. There’s no mitigation there. Which is where you’re going with your “need to distinguish between intent and capability” hand-wringing.
Curt – if he could build a bomb he would have. He asked for training in his emails.
It also appears that Mohamud’s Muslim, Somali-born parents initially tipped off police. Somehow I doubt they’d do that if their son was to be shipped of to GITMO instead of placed on trial.
And he would have been shipped off to Gitmo because…?
Somehow I doubt they’d do that if their son was to be shipped of to GITMO instead of placed on trial.
Yeah, they’d have let him go forward. Confident that he wouldn’t have been discovered and that they themselves wouldn’t have been implicated. It’s lucky for the citizens of Portland they had confidence he would have a chance at an insanity defense. Otherwise… kerblewy.

This is the best the FBI can do? There’s no *actual terrorists* out there for them to stop?
The Saudis have had some success in deprogramming jahidis. Also some failures.
Yours,
Tom
They still haven’t found his accomplices, Lharie and Khurlie.
