The new congress isn’t likely to view this very favorably. He seems to be merely rearranging deck chairs, and Scolese remains in charge.

Isn’t Weiler the guy who tried to kill CRuSR?
MSL is an elephant that needs to be cancelled and the $ reallocated. Sadly, the Webb Telescope is really important to science but clearly the program is completely mis-managed, way over cost with no end in sight. Really bad news given the current deficit climate.
Maybe they should redirect the money earmarked for SLS to JWST. I’m sure the SLS people won’t mind, being the large telescope lovers they are. Raiding the HLV budget to save the SMD, now that would be poetic justice!
If successful, MSL will be one of the more amazing engineering feats in NASA’s history. It’s all beyond cutting edge.
Alas, MSL has been a figurative cutting edge, killing off NASA’s unmanned Mars exploration in the next decade. We’re playing junior partner to the ESA on the next mission (2016). But God knows when/if that will get off the ground.
Bolden has been the Obama to Griffin’s Bush. Two Admins with opposite philosophies, but equally crappy results.
I mean, Bolden’s been so embarrassing, he made us root for Alan Grayson during last Spring’s hearings.
“Word has it that there will be a press conference on Monday where some heads will roll as this mess is reorganized under Chris Scolese. Stay tuned.”
If no heads roll will you post a retraction Keith?

I feel bad for Bolden, I think he’s been badly treated by both the administration and Congress, not to mention by irate pundits. I think he is an honourable man who has been put in an impossible position.
The Hubble Space Telescope is named after a giant of astronomy who arguably made the most important discovery since Galileo.
The James Webb Space Telescope is named after a life-long government bureaucrat.
Doesn’t that say it all?
MPM, I agree, pork is a silent killer that destroys a great many good people.
I agree with Pete’s assessment of MPM’s comments. I’ve met Bolden and I do think he is a good and decent man. But he hasn’t exactly stood his own ground, and I think that is because of the trappings that come with the pork.
It’s often misunderstood, but Rand is definitely right that “space just isn’t important”. Until it is, even great men (or women, though Lori is trying) will not stand on their principles. You can talk about all the money spent and deeds done, but if you study the efficiency of the programs, they are horrid. Few in authority really willing to fix it.

Oh really, so even before Bolden became administrator, you were clairvoyant enough to see how “bad” he would become now. Even though Bolden was a popular choice at the time.
Is this supposed to be some bizarre revisionism at work? LOL!
