You can learn a lot about a culture from its humor. I guess a culture with NO real humor then, would be a non-culture? Or, in this case at least, a weird culture?
I know SOUTH Koreans. I’m not sure they’d laugh at this stuff either.
I’m amazed they’re allowed (and I doubt anything hits the air there without somebody explicitly approving) to get away with it…
If they can pick it up, I thinking the South Koreans are loving it, though.
“The secret source of Humor itself is not joy but sorrow. There is no humor in heaven.”
-Mark Twain
North Korea has, alas, an overabundance of humor of this sort.
I heard a variation of the mouse joke just after the Rodney King Arrest here in LA. Same setup but w/ the CIA, FBI and LAPD. The punchline being, after two hours, LAPD drags out of the woods a badly beaten bear pleading “OK, I’m a rabbit! I’m a rabbit!”
The late, lamented Petr Beckmann wrote a book of Iron Curtain jokes called “Hammer and Tickle.” They were for the most part much funnier than this, but only because they reflected a tyranny less horrible. These were difficult to read, in the 21st century…
As Lewis Black said, you can tell North Korea has no sense of humor because the people there have no color. He could tell because all of the video that comes out of North Korea is in black and white.
He also described Kim Jong-Il as the winner of an Asian Elvis impersonator contest.

That’s not useful to know. Kim Jong-Il wins all the contests he enters.
