I will refer people to another posting of Rand’s and the subsequent discussion. The posting is The New US Security Risk. Quite a few of the complainers are talking about private corporations and their actions.
I really do sympathize with complaints about government. People, though, should also pay attention to private corporations. They can be just as bad as government agencies.
They can be just as bad as government agencies.
Point out a private corporation that’s ever murdered people by the millions, and get back to me.
Rand,
That’s smearing all governments as essentially similar. If you can’t tell the difference between something as badly flawed as the U.S. government can sometimes be and the regimes that ruled Germany during the 1930s and 1940s or Russia for the better part of a century, I pity you.
I’m comparing flawed institutions in American society, not comparing AIG with the Nazi Party.
That’s smearing all governments as essentially similar.
Actually, it’s responding to the smear that corporations can be as bad as, or worse than governments.

Was it a corporation that interned thousands of Japanese Americans in WW II?
You’re still not paying attention. There are ranges of behaviors for both governments and corporations — as there are for quite a few other social and cultural organizations. People behave in many varied ways. You want to say that sometimes governments behave worse than the worst corporations. Yes. So what? For a look at some libertarians who will criticize business, might I suggest a look at the New America Foundation? I’ve bought and read some of the books they push. They put out some very interesting stuff. Back in October 2008 I wrote a long blog posting about them titled Anxious With Reason Panel at New America Foundation.
I do realize I write longer pieces than most people do on their blogs. That’s the only way I can develop a complex theme.
You want to say that sometimes governments behave worse than the worst corporations. Yes. So what?
So, you should be more concerned about government having too much power than business having too much power.
And I’ve never claimed that business is beyond criticism.
