I’ve been getting messages from my server that I left my header template and stylesheet in mid edit in vi. I got tired of getting them, and went in to close it out. Did I back up the files first? No, I did not. After doing ‘vi -r style.css’ and trying to exit, and it asked “don’t you want to save that?,” of course I did. As the post title says, idiot.
This by way of explaining why my blog is once again leaning left. But only in appearance, not in content.
You are the mirror image of the Obama Campaign now: left if content, but not in presentation.
I think it is cool that you use vi.
Anyone who can use vi is NOT an idiot. I miss it — stoopid windows-based computers at work…
This is why any non-trivial work should be under version control, for example with cvs.
I was going to say what Paul said, except I was going to suggest Subversion.
But the point stands no matter what tool you use.
With a version control system, screwing up your content goes from “Crap! I hope that’s backed up!” to “Oh, guess I’ll have to revert. Shucky Darn.”
And it’s not hard to set up (and if you’re super-clever you can get an off-site hosted account for free or cheap, and that way you get a backup for free as well).
