NASA probably needs some public support. US space development doesn’t really need that support aside from some help in blocking luddite and carebear legislation. What US space development needs is viable and profitable business opportunities in space.
Why should NASA need public support, actually? The Coast Guard seems to do all right, and y’know I go weeks without hearing someone mention the Coast Guard. Heck, it’s been years and years and years since I even heard someone say that the Coast Guard got too much or too little money from the Federal Government. I’ll be there aren’t even more than three thousand weblogs where concerned US citizens convene daily to discuss the sad plight of the Coast Guard and to moan about how dismally the Coast Guard has been treated by Congress and to exchange reminisences of bon mottes of former CG Commandants. Congressional Weekly gives no attention to the Coast Guard. It’s seldom mentioned on national TV and the last time anyone from National Review referrred to the Coast Guard was probably in some Bill Buckley column from the 1960’s.
So you’d expect the Coast Guard to be gone by the end of the first year of Obama’s presidency, wouldn’t you? Want to bet?
