shut down the blogosphere
Exaggerate much?
While I must admit that I would enjoying watching the solons of the MSM squirm under the same sort of regulation that they want to impose on the rest of us, I must resist the temptation to advocate it. Regulating speech is WRONG, and if I oppose what is being proposed for blogs, proposing it for the MSM is no better..
Waste other people’s time much?
Scott, you should read the first comment (from Lexington Green) on Shannon’s post. The MSM wouldn’t be touched by such a proposal. The whole idea is to shut down the MSM’s competition.
I don’t know exactly when it was made, but yesterday at a fast-food joint I saw a CBS opinion piece bashing Twitter — just as the Iranian dissidents were using it to bypass the Establishment Media and tell the story of what’s going on over there.
Given the E(not MS, there’s nothing “mainstream” about ’em)M’s history when it comes to new-media challenges, I would not be at all surprised to find that piece had been recorded since the Iranian tweets started coming.
Jonathan….
Once you start regulating (and once you concede the idea that you can regulate in this way), it is extremely easy to extend it beyond the initial limits you had in mind.
I am reminded of Shaw’s famous quip ‘we already have established what you are, now we are negotiating price!’
