My school–K-12–is going away in the next year or two, as well. It’s a shame that, after decades of fighting to keep small schools alive, they are suddenly being swept under the rug with no fanfare or debate.
Well, it wasn’t a “small” school. It was one of the major high schools in Flint, but they can’t afford to keep them all open with the reduced population, and it was the oldest, needing the most maintenance and repair.
Just today I heard a country song lamenting, “But in the real world, they’re shutting Detroit down.”
Somebody remind me again, which party was supposed to be against corporate welfare and bailing out fat cats?
The school district I grew up in was combined/mashed with 4 others in the days of judicial “desegregation” and my high school was converted to a junior high. Last I heard, they wanted to tear it down and build a new one, not because of any structural problems, but to “enhance the educational experience”. Translation: somebody’s brother-in-law wants a big construction contract.

I just want to say I am just browsing the Internet tonight and see that Civic Park is closing and the house I grew up in on Chevrolet Avenue is now an empty lot surrounded by many boarded up houses. It’s more sad than I can say.
